Crystal Dynamics lay off staff [UPDATED]

Saturday, 10 Jan 2009 11:44

Lara Croft's under performance results in the loss of 30 jobs.

That's according to video games blog Kotaku. The lay offs at the development team responsible for the latest Tomb Raider are said to be due to slow sales of the game.

Poor sales performance in this damaged economy has already seen the fall of Free Radical and Factor 5. However, the quality of Crystal Dynamic's game has ensured the studio will remain strong, but Eidos' expectations has resulted in the cuts.

Yesterday we reported on publisher Eidos' lowered revenue forecasts, causing them to open discussions with their lenders.

If this news is true, our sincere condolences go to Crystal Dynamics and we hope you'll support the company by reading our upcoming interview with them.

[UPDATE] - Eidos contacted Joystiq to confirm the lay-offs.

The reason given? A spokesperson said, "We have increased the focus on the Tomb Raider franchise at Crystal Dynamics, regrettably this has resulted in the reduction in headcount."
